The Return of the Snow

I didn’t know what 3+ inches of snow per hour meant until yesterday. I had wiped the car clean of the foot of new snow that had accumulated in the morning, and took the dog out for a quick spin. Upon our return, the car had received another healthy layer of fresh snow, replenishing itself as [...]

Eternal Sunshine of a Powderfilled Mind

In Alaska, the light at the end of the tunnel actually has a name – spring equinox. Derived from the Latin term for “equal night”, the equinox marks the time when the sun crosses the equator resulting in equal parts day and night all over the world. This year, the equinox takes place on March [...]

In motion with Flowmotion

One of Seattle’s most distinctly diverse rock bands, Flowmotion doesn’t fall victim to any packaged music genre. This five-piece band defies stereotypes, and throws one hell of a party no matter what city, town or festival they happen to land in. And lucky for us, they are landing at the Sitzmark this weekend for two nights of [...]

I Believe in Miracles . . .

The first annual Avy Dog Benefit featuring 11 eligible (and not so eligible) members of Alyeska Resort’s nationally recognized Ski Patrol is this Friday (2/5) at the Sitzmark. You will be bidding on the chance to win an early morning ski plus lunch at Seven Glaciers with your very own patroller.  If that isn’t enough, [...]

Callan Chythlook-Sifsof makes Olympic team

Girdwood local Callan Chythlook-Sifsof was named to the U.S. Olympic team after some solid performances in the past few weeks. Callan will represent the United States in Snowboardcross at the Vancouver Winter Games, beginning on February 12.  You can also watch Callan compete in the Winter X Games on January 29 & 30 in Aspen, broadcast live on ESPN.
Callan earned her spot on the U.S. Snowboard  team [...]

Dogs Dogs

You may have noticed some little red additions to the Alyeska Ski Patrol, and we’re not referring to our new jackets. When JB bought the resort, we approached management about adding dogs to our avalanche response tool bag.
The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers patrol the mountain with their handlers, Shane Patrick and Brian McGorry.  These small [...]

Punk & Roll

Apparently they met on Craigslist. And, it seems to have worked out. Tagging themselves rock, punk and soul, if you’re looking for something a little more indie and core than the usual Girdwood jam-scene, swing by the Sitzmark this Saturday (1/23) for a dose of The Lost Marauders. Tix are $7.

300′ long, 55′ wide, 18′ walls

T-minus 14 hours! The park crew has been working non-stop all week. They are driving multiple cats and moving snow like mad. We are anticipating a noon opening of the new Alyeska Pipeline Superpipe, come out early and check it out.
The first-ever Alyeska Pipeline Masters comp is this Saturday (1/16) from 4 to 7 pm. [...]

A Moment for a Fellow Patroller

Jackson Hole Patrol lost a valuable member of their team this week. Mark Wolling was swept over a cliff and buried by an avalanche while doing control work. The community of ski bums allowed to handle explosives numbers less than 500 people nationwide, so we all feel it when a member gets caught in a [...]

Garaj Mahal in AK

There’s no reason to stop celebrating the new year! Let Garaj Mahal be the hair of your dog. This Friday & Saturday (1/8 & 1/9) live at the Sitzmark is Garaj Mahal – four guys who deliver serious “shut-up-and-listen” grooves.  Their site says they are ”a convergence of jazz-style improvisation, mystical Middle-Eastern atmospheres, and danceable American fun.” All [...]
