2nd Annual Climbathon Vertical Challenge

The field this year consisted of 51 tough participants who made a total of 239 trips up the new North Face Trail and rode the Tram down during the 10 hour time period. Last year’s race only lasted 9 hours, and impressive records were set.
Winner John Collins was able to get 11 laps in ten hours, acheiving 22,000 vertical feet of climbing. Three other men completed 10 laps in 10 hours, but since the gain is exactly 2000 feet per trip, runners continued up to the top of Mighty Mite trail, above the upper Tram terminal, and back down. This extra leg made up the last 320 feet that were needed in order to accomplish a daunting goal: “Denali in a Day”. Each competitor who completed 10 laps had climbed the entire height of Mt. Denali (20,320 feet) – within 10 hours.
Karen Williams was the only woman to make 9 laps (18,000 feet) and she actually did it with an hour to spare at the end. The youngest climber was 7 year old Michael Connelly, and Michael’s 10 year old brother banged out 5 laps. Rose Bridgman was the oldest competitor at 72 years young. Mountain running enthusiast Carol Makar-Gibbs has participated in every single Alyeska mountain run (ever) and she still has the t-shirt from each of them!
Alyeska Resort was well represented by Brian Burnett, Martin Cassens, Josh Dearnley, Garrett Swygman, Matt Carmany and Chris Adkins. Congratulations guys!
